Hemiplegia is a condition caused by brain damage or spinal cord injury that leads to paralysis on one side of the body. It causes Weakness, Problems with muscle bladder (urine) control and muscle stiffness. Hemiplegia can affect either left or right side of the body depending on which side of the brain is affected for example if left side of brain is affected then right side weakness and vice versa. In Ayurveda it can be correlated with pakshagata, a vata predominant disease. Hemiplegia is the commonest manifestation of stroke ( cerebro vascular accident).The major clinical features include

  • 1. Unilateral loss of voluntary power in the affected arm, leg and in the lower face.
  • 2. Upper limb flexed at elbow and wrist and for arm slightly pronated.
  • 3. Numbness or tingling on one side of the body.
  • 4. Trouble walking , poor balance.
  • 5. Poor motor skills.
  • 6. Speech problems issues, memory issues seizures .

RISK FACTORS

Older age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking and alcoholism, obesity, hyper lipidemia.
